Is it possible for a cat to suffer from heat exhaustion?
Cats are heat-loving creatures, but they can still suffer from heat exhaustion
if exposed to sufficiently high environmental temperatures for long enough.
The most common cause of heat exhaustion is leaving cats in a car in warm
weather, when the temperature can rapidly rise, but it is also not uncommon
for a cat to curl up for a snooze inside a tumble dryer, which is then switched
on without anyone realising that the cat is inside.
A cat that is suffering from excessive heat will show obvious signs of
restlessness and discomfort. It will pant excessively, salivate profusely,
and eventually collapse into a coma.
The immediate treatment is to lower the body temperature by bathing the
cat in cool water, but any cat that has been affected should then receive
prompt veterianary attention.
