Introduction to the Crate

HOUSEBREAKING HINTS NOTE:
Although these housebreaking suggestions refer to a puppy, the same procedure would be used for an older dog who needs to be housebroken or an adopted/ rescue dog just brought into a new environment.

Introduction to the crate
Puppies need to have a place of their own in which they feel secure and comfortable. The crate is a man-made version of the animal's need for a den. A new dog, whether puppy or adult, will feel strange in your home and the crate provides this den-like environment to which he can retreat and feel safe.

Buy the crate before you bring the dog home. Make sure it is just big enough for the dog to lie down, stand up and turn around; too large a crate will encourage him to go potty on one side and sleep on the other. It has to be small enough that the dog will have to lay in his own waste if he messes.

Line the crate with something soft. Old bed pillows are wonderful, and old pillow cases can be removed to be washed. An old towel or some other soft cloth is a nice touch.

Add a few good dog things to chew. When you bring the dog home, make sure the dog relieves himself before entering the house.

Then introduce him to his crate and use words that you will use consistently, such as "Go to bed" or whatever words you want to use. Consistency is the importance here, so that the dog will learn what the words mean. When he goes in, praise him: "What a good dog!"
