Teaching your dog not to Bite

As much as you may love your dog, it is important to understand that all dogs with teeth have the potential to bite someone. Even the friendliest dogs can be provoked into biting.

Children are especially at risk for being bitten because they may not know how to behave around animals. For example, children often show affection by giving hugs, but many dogs do not understand this gesture and may even interpret a hug as an aggressive act.

Here are some measures you can take to help prevent your dog from biting children:

• Spay or neuter your dog. Sterilization not only reduces aggression but also decreases a dog's tendency to roam.
• Immunize your dog each year for rabies. In case he does bite someone, both the dog and the person will be protected.
