Hi,

I'm a newbie to GP. Wanna be a good owner :D
so before i buy my first piggie, wat are the stuff essential to keep them properly? currently, i'm surfing the net to gather info eg breeds.

any advice?

Hi, glad that you taken the same interest as us being GP lovers! Being to find information first before you buy your dream GP is a very good start! :wink:

Although I am not very experienced, at least before you buy your GP, the most basics are:

A cage which is of course. DONT ever buy cages that have wire bottoms, that will caused your piggy's leg to be injured by hooking to it. So buy a flat and big surface cage from pets shops. Most petshops sells quite expensive, so like most forumers did, you can do a C&C cage by looking at www.cavycages.com

Beddings. The types of bedding that we use are very important to our piggies... DONT buy woodshavings and sawdust and they are dusty, doesnt have much odour control and will endanger GPs health. The number #1 recommended beddings are recycled paper pellets, Breeders Celect and Back-2-Nature. We always buy 35L straight for a cheaper cost. :D

Hay. Is it a MUST for GPs 24hours around the clock! Dont ever feed them like having meals... For a young (below 6 months), they need alfafal hay but should stopped after their 6 month and feed them Timothy Hay or Orchard Grass for a mix-and-match.

Pellets. The most favourites here (forum) is Oxbow Cavy Performance(under 6 months) and Oxbow Cavy Cuisine(6 months and above). So it depends on the age of your piggy to feed on.

Vitamin C. GP cant produce their own vit c, so we have to feed them veggies with vitamin C content like Pandan leaves, Tomato, Parsley, Celery, Wheat Grass, etc. A standard vit c to be given can be in tablet form for them to chew on or can buy kids vit c in liquid form, extract an amount from to a syringe and feed GPs directly into mouth. But dont neglect the veggies since they were supposed to be served twice a day.

Do provide a small housing for your piggy as a shether for them to hide and sleep in, such as fiddlesticks and tissue box. They also need a sense of protection.

Clean your entire cage at least twice a week if possible, to prevent wet beddings to break into ammonia and also will result to have mites or fungus on your GPs. Scoop away wet beddings everyday if possible if you have the time.

the materials u can buy from:

1)DAISO (the japanese store) in Jurong IMM for Grids
2)and the corrugated plastic board from Bras Basah or Taka Orchard Art Friend i think the shop name

Eh, ah wen u forgot the water bottle :)
get ball-bearing type is ok...dun go for those straight one, they will most likely to leak & u tot its pee so u change beddings more often :)

and also UNLIMITED supply of TLC (tender loving care)....and play with it lo....cheap toys can be made from anything, but ppl will recomend fiddle sticks...they can be bent into a 'hut' and they can safely chew on it :)

:) for a start, maybe u may wanna get a smooth coat or an abbyssinian (the hair messy messy look)... the gp with long hair is Peruvian. when they are young, you might mistaken it for abbyssinian,lolx.

That day went to Sam's. The nice and big ones (imported) are so expensive and adult! Hoho... Still havent seen yet. Even for my situation now, I cant feed myself... I have to calculate the pellet and bedding cost provided I could get a new job. But still can support J J so far. If I make unwise decision now I might end up having adoption thread instead. Must wait patiently for the right time loh... Haha...

i also last time keep one only mah...
then only after 1-2mths later i get anotehr to accompany.

the reason i keep one was i want to get familiar with a GUINEA PIG's habits,see wad they like to eat/play/behaviour. Then after i keep a few months, i have the confidence to keep another.

As days go by, i learnt new stuff everyday :) so put it to practise lo....most important is to feed it regularly and always spare time to play with it, so it loves you as well :scratchch

A few places to look for ur dream cavy would be Sam yicks, pet kiosk, pets kampong..... these are the few i go freaquently to buy supplies and recky for cavies... :p

Your $400 is per month or? Or is it overall? I was surprised when Prodigy mentioned only spend $10 monthly on one piggy... So envious!

I spend at least $10 on veggies, $18(around there) for a packet of pellets, $5 on hay, $4 on vit c per month excluding cost of beddings... Is that consider a lot?

kimchi, i went to K & K petshop in tampines.
got 10 babies ranging from abby, peru, merino (curly hair) no smooth coat babies :)
got one of them the ears are badly infested by fungus i think, they are so small, maybe about half of ur open palm :)

i took a pic...not all babies are in it, but sorry if its blur...or unclear coz the petshop yellow light (and my incompentence using HP camera) :D

i see their furs...got one is frizzy one, so is a rex?
and those abby...some the hairs are not realli rossetted....but also messy looks, so i guess when grow long, will become a peru :p

I see... Redoxon Kids tablet is big? If is a normal size, can just mix with the pellets will do. I am also using tablet form for Vit C and so far J J eats it, though I never seen it before my eyes. ;)

Pitoto, you can get piggies in any petshops or from home breeders. You can go to Marketplace for a search in selling or anyone who is giving up for adoption. If you are keen to have them as pets... You can make your C & C Cage first and the supplies and start to look for your dream piggy in preparation.

Serangoon north ave 2 the best place, alot of choices to choose from....the least for 2 pigs is 2ft x 2ft... the best u can provide is as big as ur wallet can afford.(height not important for pigs, though they do jump, but normally only popcorn in air less than 1 ft. :D ) get a plastic bottom cage, do not get the wire bottom type, it will hurt ur piggies foot. ;)

Welcome, welcome :D I think the open concept should be ok. Judging from the posts from our forum members, flying pigs are quite rare :) Some will jump, but not too high. Piggies' legs are generally not made for jumping.

Plus an open top cage make it easier for you to reach in and play with the piggies.

Oh ya. Do supervise your kiddo when he is handling the pigs, or better still, try not to let him handle it too much, cos pigs are quite 'fragile'...

i made the cage a long time ago mar.. didnt know about the cubes..so improvised with whatever i could find.. :p Woah and IMM not "shun pian" :eek: .. plus i cant drive..yet :D and i doubt my mom will take me all the way down.. and then waste all tt time to buy two grids??? there is one time where i separate an adult piggi from Pupu, and he realli determine to get out of that temporary Toyogo box...he jump leh~ :eek: i was playing on laptop then realise how come he outside of the box!! Put him back again....then io observe. He feels agitated and keep looking up....then he jump! this time round he nv jump high enuff, his 2 hand is stretched over the edges (means stuck at the armpit there) and his legs like paddling, trying to get out.

sumtimes i realy laff at wad old-generation mums think when we got pets..
for them, pets = fish, dog, cat,bird....most extreme is rabbit
when we keep hamsters, gerbil, gp, chins, they will frown..coz they not used to these animals as pets
i wonder if skali live in overseas, eg africa, then keep bb aligator, or bb tiger, an ostrich~ haha or chimpanzee how their reAction ah hohoho

I read the previous posts that males produce more smell than females as they will prodoce a musky smell. I do not know what musky means... It depends on how long you bathe them... Pitoto don't worry... They will not stink so much like rubbish but I am wondering what kind of smell is bearies referring to... Haha...

When its 2 months and above can start wet bathing them... Before two months can use powder shampoo but when its already 2 months and above can still continue to use it when you not wet bathing them... Use it as part of grooming...

For me I bathe J J in the bathroom sink, and use my water heater shower to shower him with warm temperature water.

last time when i still had Chiro, after bathe also still have his smell. Like body oil smell....gp one lah, not human one haha.
Then make me wonder whether i have bathe him clean enough or not...sometimes i bathe him 2 rounds just to make sure no smell.
However, The smaller piggies no 'oily' smell...musky i think its quite accurate description....dunno how to describe the smell.... but when go mass grooming outing in Bukit TImah remember? dunno wad the shopkeeper use, then not smelly leh :)

i think if use powder bath is good lo....then wont be so oily smell..i think it applies to human also...i read one magazine tt says if your hair is oily & u going to go out lazy to wash, powder with Baby powder....maybe same logic.

me no powder bath for PG :p coz they all smooth coats & bathe them every week....so powder bath abit redundant, but i think if i have more money to spare, i think i will buy those stuff ehuehuheue (must wait 1st, even up to today i havent pay this month's PUB bills ah~~~~) :D

For small animals like puppies, kittens, ferrets, etc can be used on piggies as well... I used PPP tearless shampoo, they also not designated to used on piggies only. But before you buy consultaion is encourage if not very troublesome if it happens o be the wrong product. Yeah wiped them with towel and blow dry them with hairdryer...

kimchi, i went to K & K petshop in tampines.
got 10 babies ranging from abby, peru, merino (curly hair) no smooth coat babies :)
got one of them the ears are badly infested by fungus i think, they are so small, maybe about half of ur open palm :)

i took a pic...not all babies are in it, but sorry if its blur...or unclear coz the petshop yellow light (and my incompetence using HP camera) :D

so u can try experiment with wadever ur mom have in her fridge....
my pigpigs love spinach,kangkong,xiao bai chye,sweet potato leaves,corn leaf,pandan leaf.

u can also give lettuce/cabbage i think but i nv give the coz ppl say they high water content, if eat too much, then will lao sai :D so i nv buy..i myself is not a veggy-lover. So my only veggy in fridge is for piggies only....

Yeah the first day J J was in his cage, got many ants... Then I so scared, wondered if it will continued like this... I guess maybe the ants were curious as in "Hey, I sniffed some living thingy here, lets take a look" and gradually after that only one or two kaypo ants climbed on top of his cage... I even thought is it J J too smelly thats why will attract them, Haha... (In fact, he was a bit of stinko when I bought him)
