i am currently using Browns Encore pellets and Brown's Timothy Hay for my piggies...BAXTER vitamin C tablets

they have no problem with Browns Encore pellets...they finish it all the time..including the coloured bits...

as for the hay...they makan the tender ones and leave the thicker ones alone..i did try to NOT top up their hay till they finish but i still notice quite an amount of thick hay left...

Vit C,i throw in about 1/3 tablet into the drinking bottle and i change the water about every 36-48hrs...BAXTER proclaims it to be slow release tablets....

i would like to provide better for my piggies..any reconmendations on brands of pellets and hay for my babies??? I hope that you guys would correct me on my mistakes too...thanks~ :D

I am using premium gps pellet - Labdiet and APD timothy hay for my piggies.
So far I try browns and oxbow but I feel Labdiet is the best and my piggies grow nice and healthy. ;) .
No wet or soft poos too...

Hanmin, from what I see, I only know there's one mistake you did which is the vit c thingy. Do not dissolve it in the drinking bottle because the value of vit c will drop as the period goes by... And hence MIGHT affect the appetite of the piggy towards the water, as in change of taste, etc. You can use a sryinge and directly put the concentrate into their mouth.

For your pellets, I didnt anything wrong if your piggies love to eat them even the boring looking ones(pellets). Its good that your piggies arent choosy... I dont see the need to change unless you personally think that its has side effects, etc. You can go see the thread "Pellets price comparisons" by Prodigy to see the prices and see what most our forumers prefer to feed our piggies with. The majority is Oxbow brand.

The thick hay do you refer to the stems? Not every piggies likes stems. Maybe because they are hard to bite. If your hay majority is soft ones its okay...

Afterall, I dont see any need to change unless your supplies brands are those no brand... At least you feed your piggies well!

haha... i m currently using browns encore, oxbow western timothy and kaytee fruita and vege mix.
As Evans weight dropped after my pellets brand change and after i went to elaine's yesterday and saw her GREEN APD wif flowers and cad cad was eating it...( Evans was not...SIaNx)
and i bot 1 kg of vitakraft GUinea Pigs Mix.
So frm i m going to buy APD hay and the biggest pkt of oxbow cusine(at $20 :D) and start giving them of the vitakraft... :D :D

most of us here use oxbow cavy performance/cuisine. and as for the hay, most pigs don't eat the stems. i normally see depleted supplies of hay save for the stems in sydney's cage. you can try giving your pigs veges lor i guess. try red and green peppers. they're quite sweet and nice, and full of vitamin c, so they're gd for your pigs. other veges can be kangkong, sweet potato leaves, chye sim.

one thing to point out daee.... not a pigs love capsicuim.... and also i tink pigs differ in different enviroments.... my pigs must finish every blade b4 i refill their hay coz i dun want to be a bad habit of being picky(even thou evans already like tat...) so i usually see empty then i refill.... Pigs got sgood memory one... i learn this frm an experiment...

oh ya prodigy. thanks for reminding me! :) diff pigs like diff veges. so you must trial and error until you find out what veges your pig actually will eat. and don't give your pigs fruits coz the sugar content is too high. how did you find out that pigs have good memories?

What expt Prodgy?? heehee... U went to Elaine's place to see her cuties?? did u see Sayang? Sayang is a bear i gave her.. Hor Elaine? U can ask Elaine to cut ur black nails for u. cos she is quite an expert when it comes to nail cutting...

2 wks ago i was giving my pigs their usual trim and this Scrappy last min moved her paw. I cut her quite badly and had to hold her until the blood stopped...

the stems of the hay are most nutrious, my gps love them, always munch away.

maybe u cld start giving them the stems only to eat, once they have gotten used to it, start mixing it with the soft hay, that way, none wld be wasted.

make sure that the ratio of soft hay is lesser than stems.

i top up the hay only when i see that majority of the hay being eaten...as for pellets..i'll be shopping at serangoon north later..so think i'll ask around..if not..think i'll either end up with oxbow or go back to Browns Encore..

Vit c....i drop the tablets into boiled water..of course i do it when the water is at room temp~haha
well think Vit c for them is quite ok for now cuz their bald patchs are recovering really fine after spraying medication and after i started giving them Vit C for the past 2 weeks...

anyway..i still find Vit C concentrate a better way to let my piggies get all the nutrition...where do i get it??...the brand??..the syringe and all?...where where where???...

thanks alot people...appreciate it~

You dont have to give them vit C substitutes if you provide enough fresh veggies daily.. also the pellets have added vit C but i guess it'll lose its value if kept for too long..

i dunnoe abt ur pigs but becoz i put 2 servings together and cad cad is a glutton while evans is a picky eater..... usually cad cad will finish those in one bowl and attack the other.... lolx... that explains his weight increase and also soft poo.... thats y i give once every two days...

ok heres how i feed them...
im can't fix my feeding time cuz of my shift work requirements...so i fix my feeding time at 10hrs interval...

i give them different veges like cabbage, lettuce, carrots,c hye sim...an occasional treat of 1 grape, small slice of apple or a small slice of orange...

as for the dry food..i leave a small amount thats just nice for 10hrs..usually when i check on their food every 10hrs..the pellets are left with 4-5 pieces...so...i suppose the amount that i'm feeding them is just right~...

hay is always there...left with majority the thick stems...but i make it a point to let them know that the thicker stems can and MUST be eaten too...so i top up only when i feel that the amount is not enough for them...

as for Vit C...i have to finish the tablets i bought for them before i start feeding them the concentrate,i've broke a tablet into small pieces and mixed it with their dry food..well they are eating it...so i guess its alright...

well thats how i feed 'mei nu' and 'xiao hei'...so...any mistakes? anyway i can improve it taking into consideration my shift work requirements?...

came back from serangoon north yesterday..there's only one shop thats selling APD hay and they are out of stock..2kgs for $30..thats what she claims..it comes packed in a box..so is this considered cheap??...and yes i changed to owbow pellets...got a 35litre pack BC bedding, and they gave me a free trial pack...all for $26....hmm spent quite abit yesterday..hmmm hmmm......

hi hanmin, after reading the posts,
i think overlook 1 thing: the water :)
u said change every 36-48hrs...which means close to every 2 days..i think if u change everyday b4 u go off work will be better :) coz the way GP drink water is like always spit back some in, i duno how they do that hahaha....coz my water bottle is transparent. I fill it 95% full and when i come back, i take a look at the water inside, they are dirty. Like got residue floating around. I think it should be not much of problem, but just eb safe than sorry lo...so always fresh water everyday is the best.

However, coz i read tt u dissolved the tablet in the water, maybe thats the reason tt dun change water everyday? is the tablet can be eaten just like tt? like ah wen's....if thats the case, then try to put it in the food bowl / ask her how she get her GP to eat the tablet :D

The concentrated Vit C syrup, u can buy in any pharmacy.
Mine is Enervon C for kids....about $5+ from NTUC pharmacy
and the syringe also buy there, small one no needle 25cents :)

APD box is 80oz, or roughly 2.3kg.....$30 should be cheap la :) online shop sell $30.50 after discount summore (mine $29) hoho :p 35L BC beddings $26 also considered cheap (but u must carry yourself????). U got a good bargain over there, i must say :) so ok lah, in overall :)

hanmin
23rd January 2006, 06:31 AM
hmm..i'm currently using B2N too..must finish them first before i use BC...i asked a petshop owner in serangoon north and she said that B2N not really that good...quite dusty..compared to BC..she needs to change it every 2-3 days while for BC..she changes it weekly..

hmm...as for the hay..i told the lady to tell me in KGS..and she said its about 2kgs and its $30 for a box...so i dont know if its cheap lor..cuz thats the only shop in serangoon north selling APD hay i think...

popcheek
23rd January 2006, 08:27 AM
the APD hay one box is 2.26Kg
standard price is between $30-$33 (so if can get below $30 is considered very cheap)
depends on where u buy :)
the smell is sweet smelling...hmmm

but after owning & keepin GP for sometime,
i realise dun buy too much lolx....
always get a just-nice stock
those can last u not more than 2 mths those type...
best is every mth get new stock
coz if u keep for very long ah...
not fresh :) be it the food, the hay, or wadever
although it is greater savings to buy in bulk,
unless u have lotsa GP or u share with frens :)
