hi all,

am a newbie in gp and juz went to daiso to buy the grids, seems daiso have ran out of the square grids and only left the rectangle ones.

read the min size is 2 ft by 2 ft, does it only imply to 1 GP which is young, can this dimension sustain till the gp is a full adult ?

anywhere else besides daiso sells the grids ?

happy new year

cheers

Have you bought your piggies? If haven't, you need to wait for some time for the grids stock to come. Otherwise, buy a commercial cage.

bearies, the last time i was there was like....last thursday morning, there is black connectors selling 12 for $2. you might wanna check it out again, it's in a pack hanging on the shelfings perpendicular to the wall shelfings that holding the grids.

i find this connector very good, cos 1 connector can use for either staight connect or right angle connecting. and the best is 12 for $2. i saw some other... white, but it's 4 for $2....

haiz... wished i had read thru this post before i went imm today.
sighz...
i juz bought the grids...planning to make a 4x2 for my pigs... but now that u all mention the amt of litter that has to be put... i really sweat when i see the size of the cage... really no money lah to maintain this kind of amt...i'm juz a student.

any other cheaper alternatives for bedding?
i'm willing to compromise a little on the smell for a cheaper fix.

i realise when i put my 'hut' inside the cage...they all will sleep in it, and they wont pee / seldom pee on the base. I think they also want a pee-less & dry sleeping place...so when i do my cleaning up, i notice the place where they sleep (in the hut)...the newspaper base not much pee stain, compare to the 2 corners tt are no huts.............

so after cleaning, i put more beddings on the corners, but not so much inside the 'hut'...and so far, it works.... they dun pee inside their house, but rather, on the outside...its quite obvious to me :)

ermmm ash, $25 for a packet of 35L cat litter can last you about 1.5mth maybe..if u only get 1 pig. I think the price is reasonable lah...coz the bigger the pet is, the more money needed for care & maintenance lo. Some use fleece wool blanket, some use newspaper, some use pet-sheet, some mix here & there....i think it all depends on wads ur preference. If let's say one mth $50 estimate (including food, veggy, beddings, etc) then just save $10 per week :)

If you want a cheaper alternative..then keep hamster lo, coz no need so BIG space, and they small creature, dun eat so much & not pee alot.

Ok ash, dun sweat just yet. Some owners may fill the whole of their bases with litter, and clear the wet/soiled bits daily, replacing the soiled litter with fresh ones, and do a full cleaning once a week.

For me, I do not need to fill the whole base. Most piggies like to pee mostly at corners. They poo almost anywhere (but for mine, mainly at the corners too). But since the poo does not really smell, I'm not really bothered by them.

What I've done is to concentrate the litter on the corners, and sparingly scatter the remaining areas with some litter, just in case. I then place non-slip mats (the kind you find in public toilets.) to prevent litter from flying out of place. For the mats, I use those with smooth edges in the patterns.

I clear the soiled bits daily, and do a full clean up twice a week. That way, I do not use up too much litter, and the smell is not really noticeable. A 35lb bag (approx 10kg) costing $26 lasts me about 2 months. That works out to be about $13 a month, which is more manageable.

This is how I manage my litter costs without compromising on my pigs' health. Cos if the smell gets too bad, the pigs may get respiratory infection, which will cost you even more cure them. So whatever method you use, make sure the smell is controlled ok? Not just for you, but also for the pig's sake.

So bottomline is try out different methods first, to see which suits you and your pig best. If you have not gotten your pig yet, then I suggest you work out a budget, and see if you can afford keeping a pig. If not, then, sad to say, both you and the (prospective?) pig may be happier if you put off your decision to keep one, till a time when you can afford it.

Best of luck!

Ashvere, if you don't mind, would you mind telling us hoew much is your budget? I know its a rude question (especially in retail line) but roughly tell us how much you wanna spend on food, beddings, Hay and Veggies. Veggies you can cut cost depending on your mum's fridge items like tomato, Pandan leaves, Parsley, etc. Which means you can get FOC for that. By your response to budget perhaps we can help you think like which kind of brands fixes the budget so at the same time you can have pigs, a standard level of food, beddings and hay daily for it.
