Is it safe to have open cages for gp in hdb? [Archive]

I've a newbie to rearing gps. So i've read up some info bout it and have decided to build my own cage.
The question is should i build a closed cage or a open one?
The cage would be along my corridor and i live in a HDB flat (10th floor)
There are seldom any cats around (but when i was young i did encounter some..but its been a long time now) so i am thinking is it safe to build a open cage?

p.s
anyone knows where else i can get cubes/grids besides Diaso at Imm (are they open tmw? 31/2? )I live in tampines so its a pain going there. Are there any selling in the east? or what alternatives do u all suggest besides cubes/grids

daiso is open throughout the whole feastival season.
as if u aren't keeping in ur house but opt to keep outside along the corridor, i suggust u built a closed cage... and if u do search ur info well, kindly take note gp kept outdoor dun survive as long as those kept indoors under same condition.

oh thanks alot for the info. Just to clarify, when u said outdoors, do u mean as in being exposed to direct sunlight those type? coz my corridor and indoor i dun think theres much difference. It's shaded all the time.

outdoor more stress on the piggies cos stranger walk here and there... the cleaner.. ur neighbour... all unnessecary noise and kpo ppl will stress out the piggies... not to mention any ppl can just kapo it away in the middle of the nite to feed their snakes =x

it good to give them some sunlight la... abit only hor.. for a short while a day... sun warm them... too much shade too cold lolx

Actually, you're not allowed to keep pets along the common corridor. At least that is what i've heard from some people.

It's ok if your neighbours don't complain, but when someone complains, the town council will ask you to bring it indoors and issue warning letters. They wil also do a spot check after issuing the warning letter.

Btw, aren't you afraid that someone will take your cute piggie away?

mine is closed cage buy from the K&K petshop...errr but nt cheap also leh....i think buy outside can get cheaper. And i keep inside the house, just besde the tv cabinet summore hahaha...........

well, if u need any help in choosing gp & going to buy accessories, i can tag along since i have whole-week holiday this week :)

ashvere - pls don't leave your gps along the corridor.. very stressful esp. if neighbours all find them so cute and keep going over to stroke them or pat them and worse, if they dunno how to carry them, might just drop if the gp struggle... then how??!! for the gps safety best not to keep outside.. and don't forget some ppl still cook them for food.. so be warned...

also, the corridor might get drafty in the night or even cold days, n the gps catch cold easily... they r very fragile animals, so pls treat them with TLC indoors... think they're ok with the tv once they get used to it... mine are all in the living room near the tv too... :D

and not that i hungry ghost,.... but some of you go back office might still get "start work" angpao...., the type of organisation i am in, not such thing one lor.... :D

oh one more thing. whether u need cover for your cage very much depends on your gp.. mine won't run away even tho their cage is not covered (they're all chickens :D).. however, the more adventurous gps might escape if the cage is not covered..

Haha... A cover is important to my piggie right now.... J J already knows how to get out of his cage... Haha... And today 2nd day of CNY, my cousin bring two female baby piggies to visit J J, I put the females into the other basket, just beside J J's cage and J J get outs of his cage in means and ways to get near to the females! When I realised him, he was outside the basket and wheek x 3~. And even the females had left and only the empty basket, he also climbed on top the basket from his cage and looked down, thinking if the chio bus were still there.

Then from this incident, my relatives all knew that J J is a LAO TI KO and also a BITER. He really bits everyone, and bits my sister to bleeding and my aunt's nails to peel out partially. :ninja:

actually.. pigs cant climb like rabbits and hamsters can. I guess ur cage height is really too short such that he can plain reach up and go out. U might wan to consider increasing the height.. Once the height is good, no chance of him escaping even though its a open concept. =)

Thanks for the advice Siwei... He can climb out due to his straw house and that "ti ko" determination... Was thinking to change and expanded his home cos it has become smaller as he grows up... :scratchch

Never Never Never put your cage outdoors. I myself wouldn't.

Imagine strangers, kids, or funny people touch your gp, pull their fur, etc.. all kinds of things that some people may do. we already hear of people feeding hamsters, gps to snakes. what else cant these people do.

i ever see a kid pull out tuffs of fur from a long fur guinea pig! and who knows, someone may 'poison' the food/ drink. i hope it dont happen. but i've seen some really bad kids doing such things before. they put chilli and detergent into some food that they feed to stray cats! that's poisoning. haven't u heard of news that a cat is found dead after flung out of some tall storey flat?

Pleassse, I really hope u can consider keeping them indoor. They are such vulnerable and shy animals that need care and protection from us, the owners. Plus they may be cold becos outside may be windy. a fiddlestick or box may not be good enough.

ok... coz these are giving by my boss and he keeps them in his corridor so i thought it would be ok. I guess it depends on what kind of neighbours u have. His are very gd, definately not the type that is mentioned

i ever go to one fren house...they put the gp in all-grills rabbit cage..plus got chinchila in other cage.wow..that one damn stinko...dunno wad they use, i think they nv use beddings, and just pull out the tray when it's necessary....i go there can straight away smell the dry pee smell...plus its at one corner tt not realli well ventilated.

dun need be a square cage loh :) maybe can use your creativity...summore Corrugated Plastic comes in different colour...maybe can make one section red, is where you keep the food &hay?...then blue section is where the water bottle is....and the yellow/green is where to sleep/etc.

i read somewhere tt piggy eyes can see in colours, and red,blue..and dunno yellow/green is the one they can see better of.

Hmmm I don't know... I knew he nibbles, he bites when I comb his fur too many times and he turn around and bite. My uncle carries him yesterday, trying to show his wife GP's teeth and wanted to bit him but failed... J J give my relatives bad impression. He really Ti ko towards my cousin's GP, brown brown and he bits the other female named Red eye. Saw him biting her mouth and ears! Haiz.... And today same as usual, he climbed to that empty basket (pai seh, haven't wash yet) and wheek wheek again... Then I tell him "Today no relatives visit loh..." :D

coz my friend have too much already so he gave me 3.
3 is becoz 2 of them are babies and 1 is the mother.

lolx..to think i study hard in sec school (Pure Sci class) and in the end all those Physics, Chem, Bio all i nv use in my jobs....

mostly is from Poly/Uni...but all these job experience, is common sense lo...u dun realli learn it from books. Eg how to handle customers....theory is blablablabla, but u cant exactly apply 100% wad the book say so. Coz different ppl different approach :)

my own method is:
if the customers are males, must use 'soft & girly' approach...i sux in this, coz i cho lor girl, and after i use this method over the phone normally after put down my face will make the PUKE action..or i feel disgusted with myself bwahahhahahaha~~~

if the customers are aunty-type, must use the 'bargain' approach...they love it :fight:

if the customers are young females, use 'fren fren' approach... :cool: and complain in between the conversations abit..... eg boss this & that, coz all employee majority always dun like boss. Got nice boss, but if they listen to 'boss not nice' story, somehow they interested.

the buyers vary lo
those aunties from Shenton Way companies.........
and males,
and some girls...

although we sell filing systems (folders) not bad lah....my target is 60K, other colleagues are 80K & 120K respectively.
This mth i think i hit 75% :)if u no hit, nobody scold u...

in short, its really a slack job...pay u peanuts, and u monkey around in there :P

AVA will come after if these people are staying in HDB. How about private property? Say landed or condo?

Or perhaps it depends on what kind of pets the person is keeping.

I've some people in landed property let their roosters roam in the garden. And once I went to view some bunnies in a condo, and that owner kept those bunnies in a cage outside along his corridor. So poor things! Will AVA be concerned about this?

if i ever have a terrace house/ bungalow (yaaa dream on dream onnnnn~) i think i gona dedicate a backyard, still indoor, those nearer to the garden type.....and put my pets there in cages la....

then if the space quite big, then i think i might have a dog, tt no need to be caged unless for precaution (eg: guests come and dowan him to bite)...but i dun think it will be the case, coz i will train & tame the dog to bark at strangers, but overall frenly dog...

corridor dun belong to the flat owner it belong to public. unless the flat owner bght the whole corridor. :D

Landed/bungalow is different cannot be compare. As long staying in garden with shelter i dun think AVA will knock ur door Unless livng condition is poor. Rgd abt condo had to ask the mangement.

Anyway NO PETS are allow to live in corridor. IT consider abuse. im quite agree with Kristie.....if u want to had a pet but it had to stay at corridor wat is the purpose having it????

I guess I'm kinda lucky to stay in a landed property. But even then, I dun keep my piggies in the garden, or sheltered porch, for that matter. It can get quite windy there, and if there's heavy rain, sure wet one. So piggies stay in living room.

Doggy stay in porch/garden cos he can tahan the wind. But if heavy rain, he 'tan dio', can come into living room to sniff at the piggies :D But he usually ignores them (unless they wheek), and SLEEPS like a PIG! :D

i agree they should be kept in doors. besides, u may have cats prowling your area, be it landed or condo and even HDB, and who knows, those cats may attacck the poor piggies. cats can climb windows, roofs, jump onto the walls. i ever see a cat walking on the wall and jump into the the neighoour's window (this is on the 2nd storey) which is left open. imagine inside got a baby sleeping in a cradle. dangerous sia.

Ya, my area got cats. Heaps of them. That's why when I give piggies 'garden time', I make sure I'm there.

But nowadays no need, cos got dog. I can stay in living room cos the dog dun bug the pigs, but will chase the cats away. Anyway, I think the cats know there's a dog around, cos I haven't seen any prowling round my house lately :)

he pass away liaoz...been with us quite a number of years...but he quite skinny he fussy eater lah, he was the one i mentioned in some posts tt he died coz of mange mites..haiz the body all so jialat, kena tt mange mites :(

Yeah Popcheek thanks for showing us the pictures! Since I am living in HDB I prefer Dachshund since its so cute, Hehe... Though I still don't know their character yet. And Evan is cute! And small size! And your dad's 4 turtle so big! I dont think everyone has the patience to wait for it grew so big, unless keep them in the pond. It takes years right?

I used to helped my ex to take care his two tortise when he went somewhere else for a mfew days (dun't remember is chalet or what liao.) and that time Camera phone just started out, I used my sis's BF's hp to capture their image, and one of them bit me! They dont have teeth (I think so) but they are more to snapping loh... I thought they dont do anything to humans one, not as if they are snapping turtles...

snapping turtles are scary lor. my friend's brother has one and it tries to bite ANYTHING that enters the tank. food never mind. but it will bite fingers too. and they have teeth...so it hurts. lucky i never kena..but my friend did.

ah wen: yep, thats EVAN...cute dog who very 'manja' to humans..everytime got human, he will snuggle to our legs&ankles, asking us to rub him :)... and he will purposely lie down on his back (means all his legs facing sky) for us to rub rub his chest....what a pervert dog hahaha...but we love him :)

ferret is like....errr u watch the movie? ben Stiller & Jenifer aniston? The polly polly.... wads the title ah? something about polly? errr i forgot.....the jenifer aniston have a pet tt she always leash & always bang onto RUBBISH BIN? ..............thats a ferret! :D

i saw some pet shop in KL selling chipmunks! they're exactly like the cartoon one? you know alvin and the chipmunks? very cute!! but the description said "active and lively" and every single chipmunk was asleep! only one was awake...and it was yawning...

thailand got alot leh .. they sell at da street 1 . haha.. next tum i will buy 1 bungalow in thailand & hse chipmunk, ferret, husky, chinchilla & guinea pig there & get 3housekeepers to take care of da hse & takecare of them .. haha

haha.. bungalow got alot of rooms ma .. haha.. i kan hse those kan compatible de to be together.. & husky shall haf da whole hse.. haha.. i tink i buy dry ice for da husky la .. put 1 bigbig box den put on chair den they kan rest below .. hahaha
