ermmm?? why u say Namly doesn't do? wat i know is my fren's gps are sent there for neutering... unless they don't do female gps? u can check with spca cos they always sterilize their gps before giving out for adoption.

some time beginning of last yr.. maybe u can call again n said you undertand one of your frens did hers there... hmm.. unless its too risky so they decided not to do it?? i mean risky in general - cos my fren's piggy is well and about and still very healthy :)

i see... yeah that's why i'm confused too.. I asked the young receptionist there and she was adamant that they dont have neutering services for male guinea pigs at namly. Oh well.. think i'll have to ask again. But meanwhile what are the charges like? And has anyone personally brought their pigs to other vets for neutering... preferably a reputable one?

hmm neutering a female, does it change behavoir or anything at all? I know male will diminish its high sex drive and smell, but female leh? hahaha, if i onli keep one/two females, den is there a need to spay them?

i believe if you keep just one or two females without any males, you shouldn't neuter them. Coz spaying a female involves removing the ovaries and uterus and it's a large operation with very high risk. Think all it does is to reduce the risk of ovarian cysts.

Actually i just spoken to Dr Ling last mth and yes they prefer to do female piggies sterilisation than males. cos males are a bit more complicated than females. But i guarantee that they do do male sterilisation. BUt (there is always a but) the owner and the pig have to undergo an interview first.
Why do u wanna sterilise ur male?
sharrel

Coz i dont want my pigs to breed... hmm.. i go ask Dr Ling then.. since i've to bring my pig back for a review. thxs anyway.

Why dun u keep them separately? Not possible?
Anyway gd for u for not breeding.. :D here i go again abt my anti breeding stance... Prodigy gets so kao wei when she reads my posts.

lol.. u and yr anti-breeding! =) the reason's coz i bought my first pig Gummy from sam yick.. the girl told me it was a female.. and i didn't check coz i thought she knew better. In the end, i got suspicious coz it's anatomy there doesn't look like that of a female's and i confirmed it with the many pictures on the net that it was a MALE. yeah.. and my other one's female. I dont wish to get 2 more pigs and besides they've already warmed up to each other so much. Dont want to separate them. So left with no choice but to neuter one. And i cant bear to give it back to the petshop for another coz i dont give up on pets that i get.
I read that the risk of neutering a male's much less than female. Hmm.. and a neutered male rarely gets impaction in it's later life. That's why i would rather neuter the male one. Sigh..

U really think for ur babies! that's gd :D shall not talk anymore on my anti breeding stance lest i chase away more ppl.
Hrrmm i did read that males are harder to neuter than females. cos the males' testicles are embedded in the body cavity (not hanging out) hence its a delicate process of removing all the sperm ducts out. a lot of damage is made during this process. Females are slightly easier to spay cos they have only 2 oviducts. Nonetheless the risk is enormous cos small animals dun survive as well as bigger mammals on the operating table.
I can't advice u on this. it would be better if Dr Ling spells out the risks for u. She did that for me when she had to knock Scamp out to check his teeth. But all the same, wish u and ur male pig all the best during the op. :)

1st February 2006, 01:20 AM
haha.. thanks. Oh man.. i saw a picture of a female pig on the operating table with her belly part opened up earlier.. looks super risky. I mailed spca to check for a reputable vet...want to get one that does a lot of neutering with high success of recovery. Hopefully they'll reply soon. But i guess whether to breed a not depends very much on the individual and whether the person's responsible enough to see through the whole process.
If only they can breed as easily as hammies. grin.. that'll be good!

Hrmmm i think breeding for pigs is abt risk of losing their lives. for me, u could be be the most responsible person in the world and if u choose to breed ur pigs and they die, i can't help but think why u do it in the first place? get what i mean? isn't abt responsiblity but more that ur pig's life is in danger. Can u justify the action u take to put ur pig's life in danger?
Up till today, i haven't seen/ read/ heard any reason worthy enough for breeding.. but it could be just me and my biasness... :p heeehee... have to admit i m rather fixed on this so i might be boring u all again. Let's not move away from ur original topic ok? Do let us know if u managed to secure the op date for ur male and i will pray for u!

1st February 2006, 01:36 AM
yeah true la.. but in any case be it chinchillas, dogs, cats.. all breeding has it's risk i suppose but prob much higher probability of pigs dying from birth complications. Yikes.. okie.. let's not deviate from the topic. I'll let u all know when i find out more and when i decide which pig will undergo surgery. =(

some pple thinks they r responsible enuff to breed. But when lives are lost which is not within their control, ow do u define responsibility? In conclusion, pple breeding their pigs will only know deep down in their hearts why they wanna breed. Its only that they are shutting it out, surrendering to wrath.

I think i'll ask Dr Ling personally. The young tied hair receptionist there told me they do not have it. She knows nuts. I think talking to such people's a waste of time!

Maybe you will need to sterilise one gender will do? And to save cost for sterilizing, seprarate both genders instead of mixing it. What do you think? Can also placed them in separate cages...
Anyway I read from somewhere that Guinea pigs (Think is for mostly referring to male) that although it wouldn't affect them in any ways but they get no-so-active easier than the non-sterilized pigs and when old, they may not able to control their bladder so well...

jennifer: glad u reconsider the option of selling them away....actually if u want to sell is ok, to lighten your burden like u mentioned...just that i think the appropriate title is better, coz i think to encourage ppl to buy pets for gifts is not ideal lah :) summore a guinea pig lifespan is quite long, about 3-5 yrs.....(eh although i said u can sell some away, pls do not take me as saying to sell pets babies as money making habits...i DO NOT encourage ppl to breed & sell for money...)
u give someone a pet as gift, they will be delighted of course, but the probability of them becoming 'bored' with it after sometime, is bigger....coz personal opinion,if a person is commited to keeping pets, they will source out the pet they want (colour, breed, size, behaviour) by themselves, find out info about their pets, and stuff.... then have more 'attachment' with the pet :)
for eg: i like dogs, but skali someone gave me a dog breed/type tt i dun like...i dun think i will love it as much as if i were to choose the dog myself...the process of selecting your own pets itself is already a plus factor to attachment.
anyway, all the best for you, be it to keep all of them and sterilise, or to gender-separate, or to sell away, its all up to your decision. as long as u are responsible & shower them love & concern, i think that is fine.
and yeah like ah wen said, i think if u decided to keep all, better separate them...the cost is relatively lower than neutering all of them (at most u need to buy more feed ware & another cage..), summore we wont know what will be the aftermath of the sterilising proces....will they get infection? will they get affected, etc

haha....no worries... prodigy cool down liao.... but next time when u guys post sales anywhere... stop and think.... there are bimbos and dimbos everywhere.... if u put this type of ad its as good as tempting them to buy those pets and when they are woken by reality.... they juz abandon.... think for the lives that u r selling away... their fate lies in ur hands.... its great news to hear that u wanna sterilise instead of selling as pigs do not adjust easily to new owners( with exception to kaypoh pigs like cad cad )

if angry/ threatening others: GRRRRRRRRRRRRR, gurugrugurugurugurugruurr rrguru, sounds of teeth chattering, open mouth BIG BIG (not yawning after wake up sleep hor), and walking real slowly, sometimes like catwalk (butt moving slowly left & right)
if happy: they will POPCORN/ jump around, twisting their butt, shake their head while jump, and make a short quick wheek wheek sound
if playful mood: they play games with each other, chase everyone, then POPCORN, then hide & seek, or pushing each other using their snout :)
if they humping on each other, if same gender means they wanna show the other who's the boss there (exerting dominance). If different gender...its obvious right haha...:D
