Fiber

One thing that guinea pigs really need is - FIBER. Fiber is the most important item in a cavy's diet.

It keeps a healthy balance of bacteria in the intestines, preventing or at least minimizing scours (diarrhea, which can be fatal). It also helps prevent malocclusion, by keeping the molars active and worn down.

In treating cavies fiber should be emphasized much more, along the lines of Vitamin C's emphasis.

Though, given the importance of fiber, alfalfa hay cannot be provided on a daily basis. It should only be given once in awhile. Once a week or fortnightly of alfalfa hay is recommended to be given to pigs but not on a regular basis.

Alfalfa, though is necessary to pigs, it can cause bladder stones or gall stones if given too often. Timothy hay can be given daily. Pigs love that too.

Do give your pigs some hay if you haven't been doing that! Keep your pigs healthy and happy.
